Introduction

          It was foreseen in 2004 that the City of Junction City would grow faster than normal due the expansion of the Fort Riley Military Facility. In the past, the City maintained it's geographic information system in a conventional method. The current GIS Web page of the City is the preliminary outcome of the farsighted vision the City Commissioners, Manager, Engineer and the senior staff. To make this vision a reality, the City has invested in the procurement of the necessary hardware, software and in recruiting personnel with the appropriate skills. With the publication of this web page, the general public will now have access to the geographic data.

           Building of this GIS system is still in progress. Our strategy has been to give the access to most useful GIS data as early as possible, while keeping the accuracy of the data to an acceptable level. Many automated methods were used to capture land parcel boundaries from available sources. If the source of the parcel digitized was not from a plat there could be a variation of dimensions between the deed record and the parcel shown on the map. The cause for this is the source, which is not a plat or erroneous plat. The GIS department is in the process of obtaining the original plats of all the subdivisions to adjust the parcel boundaries to correct dimensions. Currently the City's GIS Webpage constitutes 9 layers that are very usefull information for the public.

            Continuing GIS work will include, adjusting the land parcel lines to the platted boundaries, adding building foot prints, images of the properties, linking past records of the property development of land parcels, updating CAMA data, updating water and sewer network, census blocks etc.
